The UK government's budget in 1996 was ₤ 315 billion. This pie chart shows what the government spent the money on, divided into ten categories.

The government spent most money, by far, on social security, ₤ 100 billion. This was almost twice as much as the next category, health, which cost ₤ 53 billion. Next to that they paid ₤ 38 billion to education. Also they spent between ₤ 20 - ₤ 25 billion for three categories, namely debt interest, other expenditure and defence. Law and order takes ₤ 17 billion. The government also spent ₤ 13 billion for industry, agriculture and employment. The rest of the total is ₤ 9 billion for transport.

The outstanding feature of the pie - chart is that social security and health expenditure combined accounted for almost a half of the UK budget in 1996.
